Mithali Raj to retire from T20Is after England series : BCCI Official

On the eve of India taking on New Zealand in the three match T20 series in New Zealand, a BCCI official has revealed that Raj is looking to call it quits as far as the shortest format of the game is concerned. Raj was right in the middle of one of the biggest controversies in Indian women’s cricket after she was dropped from the T20 side’s semi final match in the World T20. Even though the then coach, Ramesh Power, was relieved of responsibilities after that, Raj’s position in the team is by no means guaranteed and it is still not known whether she would feature in tomorrow’s game.

"Mithali understands that skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will like to concentrate on building a team for the 2020 World T20 and that she is unlikely to feature in that tournament," a senior BCCI official was quoted saying by PTI.

"But a player of her stature should get a warm send-off and that is likely to be against England.”

While the official seemed certain that Raj would retire from the shortest format of the game at home, he could not confirm whether or not she would feature in the entire series. 

"It is still not sure whether she would like to play the full series against England or like former men's team pacer Ashish Nehra, play the first game of the series and retire," the official went on to add.
