Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has pulled out of the inaugural edition of the Masters Champions League (MCL) Twenty20 on Wednesday after suffering an injury during practice.

Ganguly, who was supposed to lead the Libra Legends team in the tournament, pulled out at the last moment after sustaining a back spasm during a practice match few days ago. As per a report in the local daily , a source confirmed the withdrawal of the former Indian cricketer from the tournament after the doctor’s advice.

“He had signed the playing contract much earlier and was committed to play in the tournament. Despite his busy schedule, Ganguly had engaged himself in regular practice sessions for a while until this unfortunate turn of events. We have already written to the league management clarifying the position and despite the medical advice, he will be undertaking a four-and-a-half hour flight each way to be with the team for the first match,” sources told Gulf News.

Zafar Shah, the Chairman of MCL also confirmed the injury to Ganguly but admitted that he doesn’t have a clear picture about the turn of events.

“I don’t know what the situation right now is, I heard he is injured. I haven’t spoken to Libra Legends at this point of time but he will be there for the opening match, so don’t worry about it,” reported Gulf News.

The T20 tournament featuring retired International cricketers will commence today (January 28) with Libra Legends taking on Gemini Arabians in the inaugural match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
